2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials
Indiana Sports Corporation
Shiel Sexton was the owner’s technical representative coordinating efforts for the 2024 USA Swim Trials that ran June 15 – June 23, 2024 at Lucas Oil Stadium, the first-ever NFL stadium to host such an event. Shiel Sexton provided pool, venue and construction interface. The project utilized a 10-foot-tall pool deck that spanned an acre to avoid drilling into the stadium floor and comprised three pools for warm up, cool down, and competition. A Capitol Avenue fire hydrant pumped in two million gallons of water throughout piping laid in the stadium to fill the pools.
Pre-installation work in the stadium included installation of a tap into the heating hot water system and extension of piping for a heat exchanger that will be used to maintain the pool temperatures at the required set points.
Coordination efforts consisted of: promoting collaboration between the stakeholders and the contractors with meeting management to keep the project on track; review of planned pool layouts and piping systems; coordination with Indianapolis Fire Department and Citizens Energy Group for pool filling and draining logistics; and coordination with Lucas Oil Stadium staff for existing conditions, modifications required, on-site logistics, assistance in the permitting process, and assistance with securing local resources as needed for the build.
The project planning started in June 2022. Construction took 31 working days from May 6 – June 5. Test Events took place June 6 – June 8. After the trials, the load out finished on June 28.
