As an active learner, Peluso searched for an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom for years. His goal lay in honing both the technical and soft skills necessary to thrive in a construction setting.
He spent 10 hours per week working on Shiel Sexton’s Shields Family Hall project, the university’s new state-of-the-art athletic facility. As an Fighting Irish football fanatic, Peluso couldn’t find a more thrilling fit.
He appreciated working alongside our welcoming Shiel Sexton team members and the spontaneous opportunities to interact with engineers, subcontractors, and other personnel. He felt engaged by the team as he gained practical field knowledge and experienced industry scenarios that couldn’t be replicated in the classroom.
His work with SLAM, a national design and engineering firm and Shiel Sexton’s partner on Shields Hall, applying structural engineering philosophy heavily influenced Peluso to continue his education with a graduate program following his undergraduate training.
Peluso’s interest in engineering stems from his desire to practice sustainability and reduce single-use plastic consumption.
Recognizing that sustainability is motivated tremendously by convenience led him to pursue civil engineering to help promote sustainable practices in building.
