Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital

JACOBS

In November 2008, the voters of Marion County gave approval for the nation’s third-largest safety net healthcare system to build a brand new hospital and health campus that would be fully operational by the end of 2013. Shiel Sexton was a member of the construction management team that oversaw the 37-acre Eskenazi Health Campus and Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital project.
As an integral part of the Program Manager/Construction Manager (PM/CM) Team at the new Eskenazi campus, Shiel Sexton’s key responsibilities included providing project managers and superintendents for the central utility plan, site infrastructure, and administrative office building components. Our personnel also served as project engineers and assistant project managers for the hospital/ambulatory care fit-out and MEP. Shiel Sexton provided a document control engineer to the project as well.
The Eskenazi Health Campus occupies the space on West 10th Street, situated on the IUPUI campus. It features approximately 1.2 million square feet of facilities, including a 315-bed inpatient hospital, 17 operating rooms, 4 interventional labs, 12 labor and delivery rooms, a 90-bed emergency department with a 20-bed clinical decision unit, and an ambulatory clinic with more than 200 exam rooms. The project also includes faculty and research facility housing offices for Eskenazi’s physicians, as well as administrative offices and research areas.
The campus features a 2,600-car parking garage, central engineering facilities for utility services, and open spaces that include a patient garden, a public plaza called Wishard Place, and healing gardens, such as the revitalized Olmstead Healing Garden located on the east end of the campus.
The Eskenazi Health Campus earned LEED® Gold, the second-highest level on the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating scale. Accomplishing this feat made Eskenazi one of the largest LEED Gold healthcare campuses in the world, and the first in Indiana.
On May 12, 2010, the team broke ground on the new facility. The six-level parking garage was completed first. Construction of the Eskenazi Health Campus and Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital followed and was completed at the end of 2013.
